PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a side wall capable of improving rolling resistance characteristics, mechanical strength and processability at a sufficient balance, and a pneumatic tire including the side wall manufactured using it. SOLUTION: The rubber component for the side wall includes a rubber component containing a butadiene rubber modified by the compound represented by formula (1), a silane coupling agent and silica. The silane coupling agent is obtained by copolymerizing a bonding unit B, in an amount of 1-70 mol%, with the total amount of a silicon-containing bonding unit A having a specific thioester group and the silicon-containing bonding unit B having a specific thiol group.
