PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency of generating a near-field light of a near-field light generating element and to suppress a temperature increase of the element. SOLUTION: Near-field light is generated using a conductive structure having a cross-sectional shape whose width in a direction perpendicular to a polarization direction 23 of incident light transmitted through a waveguide 3 gradually becomes shorter toward a vertex 20 where the near-field light is generated and having a shape whose width gradually, or stepwise, becomes smaller in a traveling direction 24 of the incident light toward the vertex 20 where the near-field light is generated. The waveguide 3 is arranged beside the conductive structure and near-field light is generated via a surface plasmon generated on a side face of the conductive structure. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
