PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent O<SB>3</SB>or O<SB>3</SB>and NOx in a charger from flowing toward a photoreceptor drum and coming in contact with the photoreceptor drum, accordingly, to prevent the deterioration of the photoreceptor drum and to form an image of high image quality. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a charger moving mechanism. The charger 5 is slidingly moved once in a direction to separate from the photoreceptor drum 3 from an operation position for performing charging by causing an open surface in which grid electrodes 54 are provided in a charger case 51 to face the photoreceptor drum 3 and thereafter rotated so that the open surface in the charger case 51 is switched to a direction not facing the photoreceptor drum.
