An online auction system is described, in particular for performing online realtime auctions with interaction between a human auctioneer and one or more bidders. The system comprises an auction management server configured to receive a message from a client, store the message in an auction cache and write the message to a database. The cached message is used to update a status feed comprising one or more status parameters associated with the current auction status. A client provides a user interface, which is configured to subscribe to the status feed provided by the auction management server. On receipt of one or more status parameters from the status feed, the client updates one or more display elements in the user interface based on the received status parameters.
