摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a PMD vector even if an SOP is temporally varied in a time zone during which an optical communication system constituted by using an optical fiber transmission line to be measured is operated. <P>SOLUTION: A polarization mode dispersion measuring apparatus includes a first polarization plane controller 32, a variable DGD compensator 34, a second polarization plane controller 36, a polarizer 38, a monitor signal wavelength component strength detecting part 40, and a PMD vector determination control part 42. The first polarization plane controller rotates a polarization plane of an optical signal 25 to be measured to form a first polarization plane adjusting signal 33, and the variable DGD compensator gives DGD to the first polarization plane adjusting signal 33 to form a first PMD compensating signal 35. The second polarization plane controller rotates a polarization plane of the first PMD compensating signal to form a second polarization plane adjusting signal 37, and the polarizer 38 extracts a linear polarization component as a monitor signal 39.
