<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for using an emitter for an electron gun improving luminance without reducing its lifetime. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for using an emitter for an electron gun, an emitter 14 is configured using crystalline metal hexaboride and its shape is such that the top end side of a cylinder is formed into a frustum and its end surface 2 is a plane and at the same time, the end surface 2 of the frustum is a (310) crystal plane, and the emitter is operated under a vacuum pressure of 1×10<SP>-5</SP>Pa or less.
