[Also in Group XL (b)] A hermetically-sealed housing 9 situated behind the reflector 2 of a radar scanning antenna contains a universal joint between fixed and movable sections 8, 4 of a feeder waveguide, a driving motor 24 for the movable section and a compression 25 which may be driven by the motor 24. The compressor maintains the pressure in the housing and in both sections of the waveguide above that of the atmosphere. The movable guide section 4 carries a radiator 1 which describes a circle about the axis 3 of the reflector. The section does not rotate about its own axis. It is mechanically coupled through a hollow cylindrical member 6 and a shaft 21 to an eccentric 15 driven through gears 22, 23 by the motor 24. A sealing ring 10 is provided between the housing 9 and the member 6. The fixed section 8 extends within the member 6 and is spaced from it by gaps 12, 13. The universal joint consists of a fixed outer ring 16 attached to the housing 9, a movable inner ring 17 arranged around the member 6 and an intermediate ring 18 which carries four ball-bearings 19 evenly spaced around its periphery. The bearings carry shafts 20. Two diametrically opposite shafts are attached to the outer ring 16 and the other two to the inner ring 17. |
