ACCEPTATION/REJECTION OF A CLASSIFICATION OF AN OBJECT OR TERRAIN FEATURE

A method and apparatus for the acceptation/rejection of a classification of a particular object (8,10) or terrain feature (6) as an object in a class, comprising: identifying which of a set of points corresponding to the object (8,10) or feature (6) or a set of points corresponding to the class comprises the largest number of points; for each point in the identified set: fitting a plane to points in the same cell as that point to produce a tangent plane; determining two planes that are orthogonal to the tangent plane and each other, and contain that point; identifying the point as a fit if each of the four quadrants defined by the two orthogonal planes contain a point from the set not identified as the largest; and rejecting the classification if a predetermined proportion of points in the identified largest set are not identified as a fit.
