The invention relates to a composition including: a) at least one ortho-diphenol derivative; b) at least one particular metal derivative; c) at least one alkalinizing agent, to a method for dyeing keratin fibers by treating said fibers using the ingredients a), b) and c), and to the use thereof for dyeing keratin fibers. Said hair-dyeing method enables better dyeing effects, which are more uniform, colorful, and long-lasting, and which do not negatively affect the cosmetic properties of the keratin fibers, to be achieved from ortho-diphenol extracts, particularly from natural ortho-diphenol extracts.
