A method for the photoinitiated transformation of a transformable reactive substrate comprising an initial step in which a protected ketone photoinitiator species which is present in the substrate is deprotected to form the corresponding ketone photoinitiator species for use in a subsequent photoinitiated reaction in the method. The ketone group of the photoinitiator is protected by an unsubstituted 1,3-dioxolane group. The preferred deprotecting agent is an acid. In another aspect, a protected ketone photoinitiator of formula (I):wherein R1is optionally substituted phenyl; R2is selected from optionally substituted phenyl and optionally substituted alkyl; or R1and R2are each optionally substituted phenyl, where said phenyl rings are further linked via a bridging sulphur atom or carbonyl group to form a spiro-linked 1,3-dioxolane thioxanthene ring system or spiro-linked 1,3-dioxolane xanthone ring system respectively.
|
