A drinking cup assembly(10) having a cup(12) having an open end, a cap(114) to enclose the open end, the cap having a drinking spout(116) and an air vent(118) and a pair of mating surfaces(117,119) that align with the drinking spout(116) and the air vent(118), and a removable flow control valve(20) to engage the mating surfaces. The cap has a retaining mechanism(160) that in conjunction with one mating surface secures in place the flow control valve when not in use.
