Organic peroxides are prepared by treating an aliphatic organometallic compound of zinc, cadmium or mercury with oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas at a temperature in the range -30 DEG C. to +25 DEG C. and converting the resulting peroxide salt to a free hydroperoxide in known manner, e.g. by hydrolysis with water, aqueous solution or acids. The organo-metallic compounds may be metal alkyls which may be substituted, e.g. by carboxylic ester groups. Polyvalent hydroperoxides may be obtained from organometallic compounds having several metal atoms per molecule. Butyl zinc chloride, dibutyl zinc, butylcadmium chloride and dibutyl cadmium are prepared as starting materials by reacting appropriate proportions of zinc chloride or cadmium chloride with n-butyl magnesium chloride. |
