Provided is a control device for an internal combustion engine, which enables the implementation of control by which the scavenging effect can be more effectively obtained. The control device is provided with a variable valve mechanism (66, 70) which varies a valve overlap period in which an intake valve open period and an exhaust valve open period overlap with each other. The valve overlap period is controlled using the variable valve mechanism (66, 70) so as to match the timing at which the exhaust pulsation reaches the trough thereof. Specifically, the control of the valve overlap period is varied between the case where the offset change occurs in which the exhaust pulsation entirely changes in the direction in which the exhaust pressure increases and the case where the amplitude change occurs in which the change of the amplitude of the exhaust pulsation is larger than that of the minimum value of the pressure at the trough of the exhaust pulsation.
