PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricating base oil having excellent low temperature fluidity and a high viscosity index. SOLUTION: The lubricating base oil is made of a fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol having≥40% molar fraction of a molecule (a hetero ester) having two or more different acyl groups in one molecule. The polyhydric alcohol is preferably at least any one of neopentyl glycol, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol, and fatty acid preferably has (1) a 6-10C saturated straight chain acyl group and (2) a 12C saturated straight chain acyl group or/and a 18C unsaturated straight chain acyl group.
