The method involves bringing a machine element into a near net shape state by deformation i.e. rolling, by a molding roller (11) i.e. ring roller. The machine element is processed by the ring roller in the near net shape state and is transformed by incremental setting of the roller. A tooth profile is formed as the roller at an inner surface or an outer surface of a ring (10) for manufacturing a gear wheel, while the outer surface of the ring is supported as a counter pressure element by a counter roller (13). Axial front surfaces of the ring are deformed by ball-shaped rollers (18, 19). An independent claim is also included for a device for manufacturing machine elements i.e. large gear wheels.
