A display device for displaying three dimensional images on a screen is provided with a reception unit, a signal processing unit and a display unit. The reception unit receives stream data which contains control information and a left-view frame and a right-view frame for a three dimensional image. The signal processing unit alternately extracts the left-view frame and the right-view frame from the stream data. When the control information indicates a 3D playback mode, the signal processing unit transmits the left-view frame and right-view frame as a pair for each frame period of the three dimensional image, and when the control information indicates a 2D playback mode, the signal processing unit only transmits the left-view frame. The display unit displays the frames transmitted by the signal processing unit on the screen in predetermined cycles.
