A lubricating oil composition is disclosed which comprises (a) a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (b) one or more non-halogen-containing oil-soluble titanium complexes comprising at least one ligand selected from the group consisting of (i) an anion of an a-, ß- or -hydroxycarbonyl compound; (ii) an anion of an a-, ß- or -hydroxycarboxylic acid, amide or ester; (iii) an anion of an a-, ß- or -aminocarboxylic acid; and (iv) an anion of an a-, ß- or -keto acid.
