A process for producing glycolic acid from carbon monoxide and formaldehyde using a catalyst comprising an acidic polyoxometalate compound encapsulated within the pores of a zeolite, wherein the zeolite has cages larger than the acidic polyoxometalate compound, the zeolite also having pores with a diameter smaller than that of the acidic polyoxometalate compound.
