904,395. Drawing glass fibres. RIEDEL, E. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32195/60. Class 56. [Also in Group IX] Drawn glass filaments 3 are wound individually on to a drum 2 and the wound mass of each filament severed periodically as by a rotating drum carrying one or more cutters 6 to produce groups of short parallel filaments. Each filament may be produced from the end of a heated glass rod 10 or by drawing from a heated orifice in a tank of molten glass. In the form shown, shields 8 direct the air blast produced by the drum rotation so that the cut filaments 27 are directed on to a moving band 9 provided with a suction device 18. The cutting device is moved along the drum 2 to sever the wound coil of each filament in turn. A shield in the position of the shield 8a may be movable and provided with a cutting edge, at its lower end for severing the filaments. Glass globules which form as each filament recommences after cutting fall through the aperture b. A binder may be applied to each filament before or during winding. Specification 845,601 is referred to.
|
