PURPOSE: A backlight unit, a driving method thereof, and a liquid crystal display device are provided to reduce manufacturing costs by displaying images of high quality with the backlight unit of low bits. CONSTITUTION: A gradation average producing unit(31) produces a gradation average per unit frame. A gradation value producing unit(32) produces the gradation value of a least significant bit of M bit data with regard to the gradation average. A driving data generating unit(33) generates P bit driving data for driving a light source(2). A light source driving unit(34) drives the light source according to the P bit driving data.
