Nitrosodimethylamine is prepared by reacting nitric oxide, oxygen and dimethylamine in the vapour phase while maintaining acidic conditions throughout the reaction, the reaction mixture containing at least one mole of oxygen for each four moles of amine. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of nitrogen, as, for example, when using nitric oxide formed by the oxidation of ammonia with air. Acidic conditions may be obtained by means of the presence of hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acid or by using excess of nitric oxide.
