In order to align the magnetic oxide particles of a magnetic tape transversely to its length prior to the hardening of a binder material, the tape 4 moves between magnetic poles 9, 10 which provide a transverse field and bars 14 of soft iron are disposed above the tape at a small angle with the length of the tape so that a concentrated field is provided at the tape in the spaces between bars. The slight offsetting of the bars permits all areas of the tape to be affected during the passage of the tape. The bars are secured to a brass plate and a second similar assembly may be provided below the tape. |
