PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molding die for an optical element, in which a distance between an upper die and a lower die can be controlled by a simple apparatus constitution, and the thickness of the optical element can be adjusted easily when the optical element is produced by press molding; and to provide a method for molding the optical element by using the molding die for the optical element. SOLUTION: The molding die 1 for the optical element has: a pair of the upper die 2 and the lower die 3 the opposed surfaces of which to each other are used as the molding surfaces of the optical element; and a cylindrical drum mold 4 into which the upper die 2 and the lower die 3 are inserted through the upper and lower openings respectively while being slid. An annular spacer 5 for thickness adjustment, which is superposed on the drum mold 4 to adjust the thickness of the optical element is arranged at the upper edge or the lower edge of the drum mold 4.
