PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump capable of improving reactivity and energy-saving performance in returning to a normal operation and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: This heat pump includes a compressor bypass valve 13 disposed in a compressor bypass line 12 bypassing a compressor 3, a thermometer 9 for a high-temperature heat source, measuring a temperature of the high-temperature heat source supplied to an evaporator 2, and a controller 15 having an operation mode switching section 17 for switching to a natural circulation standby operation mode for generating natural circulation for evaporating a heat medium in the evaporator 2 and supplying the same to a condenser 4 at an upper part, and further condensing the heat medium in the condenser 4 and returning the same to the evaporator 2 at a lower part, by opening the compressor bypass valve 13 and controlling an opening of an expansion valve 5 to maximize a liquid level of the heat medium in the evaporator 2, when the operation of the compressor 3 is stopped, or when the temperature of the high-temperature heat source detected by the thermometer 9 for the high-temperature heat source is a prescribed temperature or more during the stop of the operation.
