PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus which can detect defective nozzles on the basis of a bias of a distribution of dots, and to provide a printing method. SOLUTION: The printing apparatus which prints a printing image onto a printing medium on the basis of image data includes a plurality of nozzles which discharge an ink towards the printing medium on the basis of image data while moving relatively with respect to the printing medium, an intensity detecting part which casts an irradiation light that includes a predetermined wavelength component on the printing medium and detects a light intensity for detection as an intensity of light through the printing medium based on the irradiation light, and a defective nozzle detecting part which detects the bias of the distribution of dots with the ink formed on the printing medium on the basis of the light intensity for detection and determines the generation of defective nozzles on the basis of the bias of the distribution of dots.
