PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for updating firmware by corresponding to an error which has occurred during update and an image forming apparatus using the method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a first storage part 9 for storing firmware; an interface connected to an external storage medium in which new firmware is stored; and an update part 6 for updating the firmware to new firmware. The update part 6 includes: a version information obtaining part 60 for selecting the version of the new firmware for update; an update error detection part 64 for detecting the error of update during the update of the firmware of the selected version; and an update restoration part for automatically restoring the firmware of the selected version to the version of the firmware before update.
