PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect an end part of a guardrail and to prevent erroneous decision that the end of the guardrail is a person. SOLUTION: In a histogram (shown by solid lines) obtained from a projection valueθof a candidate area including the person, the sides of a left edges 40L, and a right edge 40R are higher than a thresholdθth and an area exceeding the threshold is projected upward and it is shown that there is a symmetry, while in a histogram (shown by dashed lines) obtained from a projection value of a candidate area including the image of the edge of the guardrail, the side of the right edge exceeds the threshold while the side of the left edge is smaller than the threshold and becomes asymmetry. Thus, when it is decided that there is asymmetry from projection values of the sides of the left edge and the right edge of the candidate area and the threshold, the image in the candidate area is decided to be the image of the edge of the guardrail.
