In a high through-put process for the production of carbon black by pyrolytic cracking in which objectionable quantities of grit are formed, the effluent is passed through an enlarged zone wherein substantially all the grit is retained. As shown effluent from reaction chambers 14 passes through water cooling conduit 30 provided with jacket 34 and water spray head 37, air cooling conduit 33 provided with shell 38, and radial port 48 into an enlarged cylindrical separator unit 47. The heavy material passes downwardly through valved conduit 49 while the remaining material passes through axial conduit 50, water quench unit 51, electrostatic precipitator 52 and cyclone separators 56 and 57. Air preheated to a desired temperature is supplied to the furnace by admixing air from blowers 40 and 46, the former blowing air through shell 38 and furnace 45. Specification 679,818 is referred to.
