PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element where the amount of light leakage in an oblique view is reduced.

SOLUTION: The optical element includes an optical compensation film made of transparent polymer and at least one or more needle-like or spindle-like particles of optical anisotropy between a pair of polarizer cross nicols. The slow axis of the optical compensation film of the optical element is parallel with the transmission axis of the polarizer on the incident light side.
