PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a pyridyl ethanethiol compound at a high yield, and to improve the operation efficiency and productivity by preventing problems such as the generation of a deposit sticking to the production equipment and the plugging of pipelines, in producing the same by the reaction of vinylpyridine and a sulfur-containing compound. SOLUTION: There is disclosed a method of producing a pyridyl ethanethiol compound from vinylpyridine and a sulfur-containing compound as raw materials, which method is characterized in that the vinylpyridine contains a polymer in an amount of not higher than 2 wt.%. By using vinyl pyridine of a low polymer content, a greater amount of a pyridyl ethanethiol compound per the charged raw materials is produced, a pyridyl ethanethiol compound is produced at a high yield, the precipitation and the generation of a solid component in the production equipment are prevented, and problems such as the disruption of the liquid flow and the plugging of pipelines caused by the solid component sticking to the inner wall of the production equipment or staying in the corners or in the narrow parts thereof are prevented.
