PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus which can check not only an absorbing capacity of ink by a recording medium, but also the presence or absence of band irregularities and the presence or absence of micro beading when bidirectional recording is carried out, and to provide a recording method and a test pattern recording method. SOLUTION: The ejection operation of the ink by a recording head 202 is controlled to record a first test pattern by a first time interval between a plurality of scans in recording to the same recording position when the test pattern is recorded. When recording a second test pattern, the ejection operation of the ink by the recording head 202 is controlled to record by a second interval longer than the first interval of time between a plurality of scans in recording to the same recording position when the test pattern is recorded. The ejection operation of the ink by the recording head 202 is controlled on the basis of the test pattern of the first test pattern and the second test pattern which has a smaller placement amount of the ink per unit area.
