The method involves providing and presenting a noise signal (S1) by a unit (10) for presenting sound specimens (S4), and receiving the noise signal by a microphone (3) of a hearing device (1). The noise signal or a signal derived from the noise signal is compared with a reference signal stored in the hearing device. A status signal (S3) is emitted by the hearing device depending on a comparison result. Volume of one of the sound specimens provided by the unit is considered as a parameter of the unit. An evaluation unit (13) is provided for evaluating the status signal. An independent claim is also included for a hearing device for calibrating a unit for presenting sound specimens, comprising a setting unit.
