A glass electrode (see Division G1) is composed of a network forming oxide (silica or germanium dioxide), aluminium oxide, and an oxide of potassium, rubidium, or caesium, in which the ratio of mole per cent of alkali oxide to that of aluminium oxide is at least 1.5 : 1. A ratio of 2, and compositions K2O : Al2O3 of 22.7 : 8.4 and 38.4 : 4.7 (remainder silica) are referred to. Oxides of magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, copper, iron, and boron may also be present.
