<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode converter that efficiently couples or emits light of a single-peaked spot, has high flexibility of shape, and is easily produced. <P>SOLUTION: The mode converter optically couples two different areas, an area 1 and an area 2, and includes two or more, namely a plurality of, single-mode waveguides. It is assumed that the z-axis is the axis parallel to the propagating direction of light; the x-axis is the axis perpendicular to the z-axis of the direction crossing the plurality of single-mode waveguides; the y-axis is the axis perpendicular to the x-axis and the z-axis, and the plane 1 is the surface including the z-axis passing the center of the mode converter. In order that the light propagating through the mode converter is set as the light having only one even mode to the surface 1, the single-mode waveguides are arranged reflection-symmetrically with respect to the plane 1. The mode conversion element converts the light coming from the area 1 into the even mode and propagates it, and couples it with the light in the area 2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT</p> |
