PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external combustion type closed cycle heat engine designed and manufactured under various conditions without relating the capacity of a heater or a cooler to the efficiency of the engine, having a simple structure and higher efficiency, and easy in operation and maintenance. SOLUTION: This external combustion type closed cycle heat engine includes: a gas chamber, the heater and cooler which are sealed; a flow passage conducting to inlets and outlets of the gas chamber and heater; a flow passage conducting to the inlets and outlets of the air chamber and cooler; an on-off valve disposed in the flow passage on each of the inlets and outlets sides; a working gas moving means; a flow passage conducting to the hater; an on-off valve disposed in the flow passage; a flow passage conducting to the cooler; an on-off valve disposed in the flow passage; and an acting body conducting to the heater and cooler.
