<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device easily parallelizing and thinning luminous flux, and also to provide a projector using the lighting device. <P>SOLUTION: In the lighting device 10, the luminous flux is converted into parallel light since a shape of a horizontal cross section HS of a concave mirror 22b is a parabolic arc, and the luminous flux is converted into convergent light since a shape of a vertical cross section PS of the concave mirror 22b is an ellipse-like arc. Thickness dimensions D of the concave mirror 22b is shortened in this case. Thus, thinning of the lighting device 10 is easily performed. A parallelizing lens 21b is relatively inexpensive since the parallelizing lens 21b at a latter stage becomes a cylindrical shape by parallelizing the luminous flux in the horizontal direction.
