A laminate material comprising: a plurality of impact-resistant layers 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e each layer having a region 12 comprising ceramic material and a region 22 of transparent material, the regions of transparent material being aligned so as to form a window through the laminate material, and a transparent adhesive being provided between at least two adjacent impact-resistant layers. Layers 6a, 6b, 6c comprising ductile material also with regions 22 of transparent material may be provided between an anti-spall layer and the impact resistant layers. The ceramic may be formed from a matrix-forming substance which on heating forms a ceramic material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, epoxy, polyester. Other matrix forming substances may be silicon oxycarbide, carbon-rich silicon carbide, carbon rich silicon oxycarbides, polycarbosilanes, hydridopolycarbosilanes, polyhyridosilanes, polyhydridosilazanes, polysiloxane, polysesquilsiloxane, carbosilanes and high yield hydrocarbon polymer.The ceramic material may be reinforced by a cloth, tow, fibres, shaped perform or a particulate made of carbon, ceramic, basalt or glass. The transparent material may be ballistic glass. The ductile material may comprise an organic resin such as epoxy or polyurethane and may be fibre reinforced. The laminate material may be used in armour, security doors or windows. |
