The vehicle e.g. following vehicle (2), has a transmitter/receiver comprising a control device modulating intensity of light signal (3) emitted by an LED light based on a message. The control device determines another message based on signal measured by an optical detector. The transmitter/receiver sends the former message to another transmitter/receiver, receives the latter message and determines distance between the vehicle and a device e.g. leading vehicle (1) or fixed signaling equipment, based on time elapsed between transmission of the former message and reception of the latter message. The LED light is front LED light, rear LED light or side LED light. The fixed signaling equipment is chosen from a group comprising signaling light, panel, milepost and barrier. An independent claim is also included for a method for performing communication between a vehicle and a device.
