The invention relates to a GSM communication module making it possible for an application controlling same to specify a set of desired criteria concerning the characteristics of the packet-switching service provided by the cell. Said set of criteria can be taken into account by the module at different levels. The module can take said criteria into account in the method for the initial selection of a cell for connecting thereto. The module can also take said criteria into account in the method for re-selecting a new cell and in the method for monitoring the neighboring cells.
