PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: in order to correct a difference in reflectance or surface tilt amount for every reflection surface caused by the limit of manufacturing accuracy of a polygon mirror, there is a method of reading correction data corresponding to the reflection surface, from a memory based on periodical data of a BD signal, and then, correcting a light amount based on the correction data, but the erroneous correction data is possibly read due to soiling on the reflection surface of the polygon mirror. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is configured to update reference periodical data corresponding to the correction data, and compare the updated reference periodical data with the periodical data of the BD signal detected by a detecting means.
