<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine constructed so that the lift characteristics of an engine valve are not affected by the relative difference in thermal expansion between a control shaft and the internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: A position change mechanism (30) is constructed by an eccentric shaft portion (22) of the control shaft (17), the externally toothed gear (37) of a cam follower (31), and the internally toothed gear (27) of an oscillation cam (23). The control shaft (17) is rotated when the open-close characteristics of the engine valve (2) are changed. The externally toothed gear (37) is revolved around the axis of the control shaft (17) by the eccentric shaft portion (17). An engaging point (G) of the internally toothed gear (27) with respect to the externally toothed gear (37) is moved in the circumferential direction of the internally toothed gear (27) by the revolution of the externally toothed gear (37).
