PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument for automatically measuring FCC (Fuel cracking catalyst) catalyst particles constituted to be able to precisely calculating not only the concentration but also particle size distribution of the FCC catalyst particles. SOLUTION: The instrument for automatically measuring the FCC catalyst particles includes a sample fixing jig 1 for fixing and holding a sample of fuel oil on the surface of glass, a light source 2 for upward emitting near infrared rays to irradiate the sample, the microscope 3 arranged just above the sample fixing jig 1 to magnify a part of the sample to catch the same in a visual field, a monochromatic area camera (imaging device) 4 for imaging a part of the sample magnified by the microscope 3, an X-Y table 5 for moving the sample fixing jig 1 longitudinally and laterally to be able to image the predetermined area part of the sample by the monochromatic area camera 4 by altering the visual field of the microscope 3 and an operator (computer) 6 for subjecting the respective images taken by the monochromatic area camera 4 to image processing to discriminate the FCC catalyst particles from the respective images to thereby measure the number of particles and a particle size and calculating the concentration and particle size distribution of the FCC catalyst particles on the basis of the measured result.
