PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for cooling a high temperature steel plate, which includes an upper surface cooling device and a lower surface cooling device and allows to obtain a uniform temperature distribution which is small in temperature fluctuation as the temperature distribution in the width direction of the steel plate after cooling. SOLUTION: The upper surface cooling device has a plurality of slit laminar nozzles which are arranged dividedly in the width direction of the high temperature steel plate, and the plurality of these slit laminar nozzles are arranged so that the axial direction of each nozzle of which forms an inclined angle to the passing direction of the high temperature steel plate in plane view and the cooling water which is caused to flow on the high temperature steel plate by these slit laminar nozzles is not interfered with each other at least in the upstream side in the passing direction of the high temperature steel plate. The lower surface cooling device has a lower surface cooling header which has many jet orifices arranged zigzag with which columnar jet cooling water is jetted upward vertically toward the lower surface of the high temperature steel plate and a lower surface masking plate for covering the cooling water from the lower surface cooling header in the end parts in the width direction of the high temperature steel plate.
