PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a breaking device of an elevator using a rope as a body to be braked and improving breaking performance. SOLUTION: The breaking device of an elevator includes: braking elements 17a arranged in a pair, having two slopes with a V-shaped side shape on the opposite surface of the braking surface, and moving downward when a car 4 moves downward and moving upward when the car 4 moves upward by friction generated when pressed against a rope 3; an operation body 17c arranged on the opposite surface of the braking surface of the braking element 17a and displacing the breaking elements 17a toward the rope 3 when the power supply to an actuator 16 is interrupted; and a slope body 17e for breaking having two slopes 17e1, 17e2 substantially parallel to the slopes of the breaking elements 17a and applied with pressing force toward the rope 3 by an elastic body 13 for breaking.
