PURPOSE: A steering wheel unit of a vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to improve driver's attention on driving by sensing and warning that driver's hand separates from the steering wheel unit. CONSTITUTION: A steering wheel unit of a vehicle comprises a steering wheel(107), a hand detection sensor(110), a controller(150), and a display(105). The steering wheel is operated by a driver to control the driving direction of a vehicle. The hand detection sensor is installed in the steering wheel and senses a hand grasping the steering wheel. The controller determines whether the hand is grasping the steering wheel or separated from the steering wheel. The display is formed above the steering wheel and shows the state of the hand grasping the steering wheel determined by the controller.
