[Also in Division B7] A splice strip 6 formed of rubber reinforced with short lengths of filamentary material, such lengths ranging between “ and 1“ inches, is used to bridge and joint together two rubber portions, e.g. the ends of a tread strip 8 of a pneumatic tyre, as shown in Fig. 3, or the ends of a solid tyre, with some of the filamentary material extending across abutting edges of the rubber portions and the splice strip being impressed into the adjacent rubber. The ends of the uncured tread strip 8, Fig. 3, are brought together and to their outer surface is applied an uncured splice strip 6 comprising rubber gum stock reinforced with filamentary material 12 such as wires, nylon or polyester monofilaments, yarn, or flock. The splice strip is pressed into the surface of the tread strip during curing in a mould to form a surface splice, as shown in Fig. 4. The filamentary material is preferably orientated perpendicularly to the plane of the interface of the ends of the tread strip to give added resistance to separation of the ends.</p> |
