A process for the thermal cracking, i.e. a cracking process carried out in the presence of hydrogen or mixtures containing hydrogen (e.g. water gas or coke oven gas) and in the absence of a catalyst, of a tar acid or a tar acid fraction comprises passing the tar acid or the tar acid fraction in the presence of hydrogen through a coke bed heated to a temperature of 550-800 DEG C., and preferably 600-700 DEG C., the ratio of the hydrogen to tar acids being between 1 : 1 and 4 : 1 and preferably 2 : 1. The process is preferably carried out under a pressure of up to 30 atmospheres and the coke bed consists in particles of coke maintained in a fluidized state by the passage of hydrogen. In Example 1 a mixture of the tar acids o-cresol and 3,5-xylenol together with hydrogen in the molecular ratio of 3:1 under a pressure of 30 atmospheres was fed to a reactor for 11 seconds to yield 23.7% phenol and 10.3% meta and para cresol.
