Liquid chlorine is prepared from a chlorine-containing gas by passing the gas through one or more downwardly inclined tubes 6 which have a coolant passing over their outer surfaces and which open into the lower portion of a chamber 8 <PICT:1000148/C1/1> which in its upper part has a point 9 for drawing off liquid and an outlet 10 for any remaining gas. As shown, gas enters the tubes at 4 and is cooled by a coolant, e.g. liquid chlorine, at a lower pressure than that in the tubes. The tubes enter chamber 8 at points 7 and liquid fills the body and flows out at outlet 9 which is situated in the body at such a height that the volume above the outlet is at most 1/3 of the total volume and may be less than 1/5 of the total volume of the body. At the lower end of the chamber a conduit 11 is arranged, in which a valve 12 is provided for drainage purposes. Any excess gas escapes through outlet 10.
