PURPOSE: A variable displacement swash plate compressor is provided to minimize the operating noise and improve the operating reliability by reducing hitting noises. CONSTITUTION: A variable displacement swash plate compressor comprises a cylinder block(110), a rear housing, a valve assembly(160), a piston(115), and a restricting surface(185). The rear housing includes a suction chamber(131) and discharge chamber(133). The valve assembly comprises a valve plate(170) having a suction hole(172) and a discharge hole(174), a suction reed(183) which opens and closes the suction hole, and a discharge reed(193) which opens and closes the discharge hole. The piston compresses refrigerant flowing in through the suction hole and discharges the compressed refrigerant through the discharge hole. The restricting surface is formed on the back side(110') of the cylinder block and supports the leading end of the suction reed in the state of opening the suction hole.
