[Also in Division F4] A cylindrical cargo tank 10 for transporting cryogenic liquid in tankers, e.g. liquefied methane, comprises a plurality of frames 11 connected by plating to form the walls of the tank, the frame extending diametrically across the top and bottom of the tank and traversing the side of the tank substantially parallel to the axis of the cylinder, and tie rods 14 extending diametrically across the tank to tie the side portions of the frames. The frames are joined at the top and bottom of the tank to support spigots 12 and 13, respectively. Two or three levels of tie rods may be provided and the rods may be interconnected by a central vertical tie bar extending between the spigots. Alternatively, the tie bar may only extend from the top spigot 12, Fig. 4 (not shown). The tie rods 14 are enclosed in loose-fitting heat-insulating tubes of neoprene, polyethylene, nylon or polyvinylchloride. The tie bar may be similarly enclosed. The plating is curved so that it is subject only to tensile stress, the degree of curvature varying over the height of the tank the bottom plating may also be similarly curved. Horizontal cireumferential stringers 18 are provided to which the tie rods 14 are connected. The tank may be supported in the tanker by the spigots 12 and 13, and by radial stools or slides. |
